Turkey is increasingly emerging as an attractive destination for those considering relocation. The number of foreigners moving here permanently has been steadily rising, and this year has witnessed a significant surge in those choosing to leave their homeland for the shores of Turkey.

While the merits of Turkey as a destination have been extensively discussed, relocating is always a complex endeavor, even to the most comfortable and hospitable country. Here are some tips for those brave enough to take the leap.

Tip 1: Reconnaissance

To begin, selecting the right city and neighborhood to buy property in is crucial. Commence your search virtually, investigating where people from various countries are moving to, reading reviews, and conversing with those who've already made the move. From the multitude of options, narrow down a few cities or neighborhoods (if you've already chosen a city). Before finalizing your decision, spend time in these places by renting accommodations for several weeks. It's essential to experience living in different cities (neighborhoods) for the sake of comparison. This will provide you with a comprehensive understanding of your potential new home. Always rely on your personal impressions and preferences when making a choice. What suits one might not fit another perfectly.

Tip 2: Employment

Turkey offers job opportunities for professionals across various fields. While proficiency in Turkish is a significant advantage, as it often leads to higher salaries, not knowing the language initially shouldn't deter you from finding work unrelated to your profession. There are numerous vacancies in the tourism, food service, and service industries. Before you move, determine where you'll be working. This avoids arriving and realizing that there's a lack of suitable employment options in your chosen city or neighborhood. Remote work is also a viable option, offering a convenient, stable income without the need to search for local employment.

Tip 3: Financial Preparedness

Even if you have secured employment or know where you'll be working, having a certain amount of money set aside for the initial period is essential. Unforeseen expenses are likely to arise, and having extra funds during the initial adaptation phase is crucial. This is particularly true when moving with children, who may require paid courses, activities, and more. Estimate the cost of living for a month and bring several months' worth of savings. It's worth noting that Turkey is attracting a significant number of retirees, and with personal property ownership, pensions are often sufficient to support a comfortable life.

Tip 4: Documentation

Gather all necessary documents, both yours and those of your children, that might be needed abroad. Diplomas, certificates, birth and marriage certificates, and so forth, should be apostilled to verify their authenticity. If one parent is moving with a child while the other remains behind due to a divorce, a notarized permission from the second parent is mandatory. This is essential for obtaining a residence permit for the child. In case the second parent is deceased, a death certificate is required.

Tip 5: Adaptation

No matter how often you've vacationed in Turkey or how many friends you have there, adapting to a new country comes with its challenges. It's an unfamiliar land with its own customs, conditions, and nuances. Vacationing during the summer and living year-round are distinct experiences. Thus, prepare yourself for the challenges of the first year; they will inevitably arise. Adapting to a new lifestyle might be quick for some and more challenging for others. Children and elderly individuals tend to adapt most seamlessly. Children quickly make friends and adjust to new environments, often outpacing adults in language acquisition. Retirees also adjust relatively swiftly, forming comfortable routines and enjoying their time without the need to engage in full-time work or integrate heavily into society.

Tip 6: Fearless Approach

Moving to Turkey is far from intimidating. The country is welcoming to foreigners, hosting millions of tourists annually and thousands of permanent residents. Foreigners are neither a surprise nor a source of negativity. Especially in resort towns, the European influence is so strong that many immediately feel at home.
